Candidate Profile
Goodwill Inn Human Service Workers are responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Goodwill Inn Emergency Shelter. They are strong multi-taskers grounded in Housing First principles and practices, with sensitivity to persons with disabilities or who are disadvantaged. Reports to the Goodwill Inn Operations Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Support the mission and vision of Goodwill Northern Michigan.
Perform work in a safe manner observing all Goodwill safety policies/procedures.
Perform duties and interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner. Respect the diversity of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.
Ensure the confidentiality of all persons served.
Provide safe, dignified and respectful environment for all persons served.
Knowledge and understanding of the Goodwill Inn’s policies and procedures as written in the Goodwill Inn Manual.
Knowledge of emergency procedures to safely evacuate the building for emergencies or to move guests to a designated safe area according to established procedures as indicated in other emergencies.
Responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and safety of physical facility and grounds.
Ensure the compliance with Goodwill Inn’s zero tolerance of drugs, alcohol and violence.
Responsible for intake process and exit of guests.
Responsible for the accurate records of daily events data collection and HMIS data entry.
Provide support and information to guests.
Responsible for the safety of all guests and visitors and compliance with Inn policies.
Ensure accurate guest sign-in records.
Provide intake and exit of guests, and decide bed assignments.
Provide community resource information as needed.
Monitor incoming and outgoing guests and visitors to the shelter.
Accept donations from the community and document donations; issue receipts as required.
Provide Inter-agency communication as necessary to secure emergency lodging or assistance for those who must be turned away when the shelter is at capacity.
Assist or attend to an ill or injured person within certification guidelines after summoning professional 911 emergency medical care.
Follow all procedures for documentation of any injury or incident.
Attend trainings and staff meetings as scheduled.
Other duties as assigned by the Management Staff.
Requirements
High School Diploma or GED required; some college in human services field preferred.
Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
Knowledge and understanding of circumstances and issues of homelessness.
Previous experience in counseling, human services, housing, substance abuse, and/or job placement preferred.
Good phone etiquette, able to type 30 wpm, and basic computer knowledge.
Able to multi-task.
Physical Requirements
Standing, lifting, carrying, pushing, bending, kneeling, reaching, walking, walking on uneven surfaces, hearing, seeing, twisting, turning and repetitive movement.
Ability to do medium lifting, 20-30 pounds, and occasional heavy lifting.
Compensation
Human Service Workers begin at $17 per hour. Full time and part time positions are available. Goodwill Northern Michigan offers benefits to full time employees that include a retirement plan with match, group health plan, dental, vision, life insurance, and paid time off.
