Candidate Profile 

Our General Accountant is a detail-oriented professional excited about supporting a finance department on the move as we update our systems to better support our community-supported social enterprise. The successful candidate is an adaptable multitasker with excellent accounting skills. The General Accountant assists the Controller/Interim CFO with general accounting and financial reporting activities and coordinates departmental activity during month, quarter, and year-end closes. Responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and performing a wide variety of finance, administrative, and program support activities for Goodwill Northern Michigan.

Essential Duties

  • Support the diversity and differences of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.  

  • Perform work in a safe manner observing all Goodwill safety policies/procedures.

  • Perform duties and interact with all Goodwill team members, clients, and customers in a professional manner.

Primary Responsibilities  

  • In collaboration with Controller/Interim CFO, coordinate and/or perform general accounting activities, including reconciliations and creating and posting journal entries during month end close.

  • Posts all accounts receivable, deposits, and other cash receipts.

  • Post ecommerce sales to general ledger.

  • Reconciles employee benefit deductions to payroll and vendor invoices.

  • Reconciles bank monthly and record related bank and investment activity. Verifies appropriate backup and signatures for transfers.

  • Provides information of donations to fund development department. Reconciles all donations against fund development records and identifies and corrects discrepancies.

  • Maintains cash summary sheets for updating dashboards.

  • Performs manual journal entry review monthly, verifying appropriate backup and signatures.

  • Balances and sends fiduciary account information to fiduciary organizations (KCCC, ACC).

  • Distributes departmental financial statements to managers monthly.

  • Manages invoicing and record keeping for all grants.

  • Maintains grant spreadsheets to support the monthly grant billing process and prepares monthly invoices.

  • Performs monthly billing for Goodwill Inn to the Salvation Army.

  • Works with Grant Administrator and program staff to ensure all expenditures comply with state, federal, and private grant program requirements and align with approved budgets.

  • Manages the grant receivable subsidiary ledgers and reconcile to the general ledger.

  • Assists the Controller/Interim CFO in the preparation of the annual and grant budgets and grant reporting.

  • Reviews grant budgets & spreadsheets with Grant Administrator at lease quarterly.

  • Works with Grant Administrator on submitting annual grant reports to HUD, MSHDA, VA, and oversight bodies.

  • Develops and conducts internal audit schedule of grants in conjunction with Grant Administrator.

  • Maintains all grant records including expense documentation, grant award letters, budgets, etc.

  • Creates, revises, and maintains written grant policies and procedures.

  • Provides documentation and assist Controller/Interim CFO during financial audit(s) including necessary information for the A-133/SEFA.

  • Assists the Controller/Interim CFO with maintaining chart of accounts for appropriate grant accounting & reporting needs.

  • Provides general office support including greeting Admin office visitors and reviewing Finance email account.

  • Protects organization by keeping information confidential.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.

  • Other duties and projects as assigned by Controller/Interim CFO including identifying and setting goals for the year to accomplish as a finance team.

Education, Licenses, Certifications and Experience 

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • Some post-secondary education in accounting, finance.

  • Bachelors or Associates degree in accounting or finance preferred.

  • 3-5 years general accounting experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Computer Skills, knowledge of Word, Excel.

  • Written and verbal communication skills.

  • Congenial personality, able to work closely with a variety of people; works well in a team.

  • Ability to set priorities, take initiative, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Self-starter, very detail-oriented and possess the ability to work independently.

  • Good organizational and project management skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to sit and work at a computer most of workday.

  • Able to stand, walk, sit, bend, reach.

  • Able to hear, speak.

  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing.

  • About to lift light loads, 10-20 pounds, and greater weights with assistance

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $48,000 - $60,000 depending on experience. Goodwill Northern Michigan offers a benefits package that includes Medical, Dental, Vision, EAP, 401(k) with match, Paid Holidays, and Paid Time Off.
