Make a positive community impact in one of Michigan’s most beautiful four-season towns at Goodwill Northern Michigan, headquartered in Traverse City. We are seeking a Controller to continue our work as a trusted community-owned nonprofit working to support regional housing and food stability, as well as workforce development. We’re one of Northern Michigan’s largest nonprofits and largest employers, and our Controller is a skilled accounting professional who enjoys working with a team in a finance department on the move.

About the Organization  

Located in one of Michigan’s most beautiful four-season towns, Goodwill Northern Michigan is one of Northern Lower Michigan’s largest nonprofit employers. Thanks to proceeds from our thrift stores and community support, we run programs that bring food to neighbors and help people find home. With over 200 employees, an engaged board, great staff, a dynamic donated goods social enterprise, and important community programs with critical missions, we are working to support regional food and housing security, and ensure that everyone in our community can thrive. 

Candidate Profile 

The Controller is a skilled accounting professional who enjoys working with a team in a finance department transitioning to an updated accounting system.

Key Responsibilities  

  • Supports the mission and vision of Goodwill Northern Michigan. 

  • Supports the diversity and differences of others including, but not limited to, those with cultural, ethnic, and gender differences, individuals experiencing homelessness, and persons with visible and non-visible disabilities.  

Requirements 

  • BA/BS degree in Accounting, Finance, or related major required. CPA preferred. 

  • 5+ years experience in business or nonprofit accounting/finance role.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Strategic thinker with strong project management skills.  

  • Experience with assessing and/or implementing new financial management software systems preferred.

Compensation

Compensation for this position is in the $60,000-$70,000 range. Goodwill Northern Michigan offers benefits that include a retirement plan with match, group health plan, dental, vision, life insurance, and paid time off.
